Our Activities
Beekeepers in a seven county area benefit from the activities of the PBA and the encouragement given towards high quality queens. Locally produced queens with superior genetic traits can improve a honey bee colony's health, productivity and ability to survive. Drones from these queens are helpful in spreading those same beneficial qualities throughout the Parkland.
Because of changing seasons every month is different for the beekeeping community. Monthly meetings are an opportunity for members to share information about current conditions, what management options are available and what to expect and prepare for in the weeks and months ahead. Nectar flows and honey harvests are always "sweet" topics of discussion.
Beginning in 2014, thanks to our partnership with Mineral Area College (MAC) we have established hives on campus for demonstration purposes and to give new hobbyists "in-hive" experience.
Some have been reluctant to try keeping bees due to the cost of honey extracting equipment. We have solved this issue with the assistance of MAC. Now, members have access to modern and portable uncapping and extracting equipment for when the harvest of their fresh local honey begins.
