PARKLAND BEEKEEPER ASSOCIATION

Newbee Worksheet on Path to Parkland Beekeeper Status

July/August Meetings

Summer Management

What are the considerations about hive placement?

What are optimum conditions for producing wax production for new combs?

New combs are fragile the first year.

Understand the "general concept" of the season cycle of colony management shown below.

We will have much discussion on this as a thorough understanding of this is necessary for success.

What is meant by the term "top supering" and how does it differ from "bottom supering"?

What is meant by "reversal"?  What does it accomplish and what are the signs it is needed?

What is the difference between swarming and absconsion?

What conditions contribute to swarming?  How is swarming discouraged by the beekeeper?

How many pounds of stores does the average colony need to get it through the winter?

What is the accepted method of judging the quality of the queen?

What is robbing behavior in bees?  When is it the worst and how does a beekeeper deal with it?

What is the most frequent cause for a weak colony?  (Debatable)

When should one feed bees and how is it done?  What are the ratios of sugar/water and what ratio is appropriate for what desired outcome?

If absolutely necessary to kill a colony of bees, how can it best be accomplished?

What are the considerations of moving hives from one place to another?

How are queens replaced by the bees?  By the beekeeper?  How does one introduce a queen to a queenless colony?

How does one recognize disease problems in a hive?  When we doubt the health of our bees what should we do?  What should we NOT DO?

What are the most serious diseases affecting bees?  How can we get a diagnosis if we think we have problems?

What are the two most destructive parasites of bees?  How are they similar and how are they different?  How does one control them?

What other pests of the hives might our bees encounter?
